FIREDo not reschedule.

Three people who have never met set out on the same day.

A photographer with 42,000 pictures, none of which hangs on her wall. A nurse who reads every body, except his own, for years now. A planner whose calendar knows an appointment she never entered: FIRE. Do not reschedule.

All three paths lead into the same valley, to the same fire, to a wise man who is expecting them. He explains nothing. He asks three questions.

DRUM
BEATThe first one still rings.

When you are buried alive, you learn a lot about yourself.

I lay in a dune in the desert, almost naked, a cloth over my mouth and eyes, and a man shovelled sand over me. Sand lies on the body like paving slabs, one after the other. Down there you know what was. And you know which life you want to live, if you get out again. Then I heard footsteps.

It started with a coffee. I stood in the kitchen, cup in hand, a life that had delivered what was ordered, and a question that kept flying along anyway, from airport to airport: Where do we come from? Where are we going? I booked a shamanic workshop the way you book an appointment. In a business shirt, no cushion. Then someone struck a drum, and something switched on that has never switched off.

Twenty years later I tell what came after. A river that washes thoughts downstream. A monastery without windows. A crown witness at the breakfast table. A teacher who answers every question, and one who leaves no trace.

No guidebook. No levels. A path, told by someone who walked it.

RITUALSWho brings you back?

No ritual without a way back.

Gudrun says yes, gladly, before the question is finished. For thirty years she did what a voice in a doctor's practice told her. Then she lies in a tent with fifty strangers, breathing, and for the first time she is all there. A young woman pulls her up. Too early.

For a year she looks for the tent again. A Wednesday where forty people dance. Cacao. A sound bath. A man with healing hands. And every Sunday a notebook where she writes down what she got wrong. For a year she believes: it is on me.

Then a man by the lake asks her a question nobody has asked her before: Was there any instruction on how you were meant to come back?

A book about a market where there is always a next thing. About teachers who mean well and cannot bring anyone back. And about what Gudrun was missing in the tent, the thing no training teaches: bringing someone back is a craft.

For those who go. And for those who sit beside them.

The thread through all three books

Three powers you were born with.

The last time you used them, you did not have a calendar yet. Each book leads to one of the three questions. Once you have answered them for yourself, you read your own life differently.

First question

What do you see?

Perception

Seeing is quiet. It stands still. Imagining is loud. Whoever knows the difference sees the light in the fog that has no business being there, and walks towards it.

Second question

Where are you?

Awareness

Where your awareness is, that is where you are. The warmth was never in the hand. It was you. The mind becomes again what it was meant to be: a good servant.

Third question

Where does your line go?

Intention

The head makes plans: things you can grasp and lose again. Intention comes from the heart. It was there first, and you find it. That is your line. Align instead of strain.

The author

Andy DittrichAround fifty workshops with indigenous shamans. Always as a student.

The names of his teachers he keeps to himself. What he passes on is what was given to him at the fire, in the only form it ever had: as a story.

He spent his working life in learning and development for organisations, in around thirty countries. The answer to his question he found elsewhere: with two indigenous shamans, in North America and in Mongolia, and with a teacher in the Moroccan desert. Many years, many nights at the fire.

A shaman is something you are from birth. What you can learn is to listen when the drum is struck.

He lives and works in Switzerland.
